2018 ISA’s World Junior Surfing Championship begins…


 
A record no. of countries and surfers will participate in Vissla ISA Junior World Championship held at Huntington Beach in California.
It will feature with 44 countries participating from five continents and in terms of participation 362 surfers participated with a record broken in no. of women surfers as it increased from 104 in 2016 to 154 today.
Team USA will have an home advantage and will look to defend their title and will try to win for unprecedented third Gold in four years after the first and second coming in USA and Japan championships.

Vissla is title sponsor and other supporting sponsors for the international event are of Visit Huntington Beach as the Presenting Sponsor, Pasea Hotel and Spa as the Official Host Hotel, and Surfrider Foundation as the Official Sustainability Partner.

Last year 38 nations participated and this time we will have six new participators which are Tahiti, Wales, Norway, Venezuela, China and Spain with Tahiti being the first team to register at 21st September and Spain being the last on 15th October.
There will be two categories under 18 and under 16 in both the genders and in boys under 18, 16 there will be 114 and 102 surfers participating respectively and in girls under 18, 16 there will be 86 and 87 surfers participating respectively.

This year’s defending World Champions are as follows:
Girls U-16: Alyssa Spencer (USA)
Boys U-16: Joh Azuchi (JPN)
Girls U-18: Brisa Hennessy (HAW, since changed to CRC)
Boys U-18: Ignacio Gundesen (ARG)

In the all the main boys events there will be six rounds and a final with each rounds having different sets of qualifying heats which are:
Round 1 – 32 Heats
Round 2 – 16 Heats
Round 3 – 8 Heats  
Round 4 – 4 heats
Round 6 – 1 Heats  
Final

Same as Boys, Girls will also have six rounds and a final with a difference in no. of participators as the total no. boys are 216 and girls are 173 which reduces the qualifying heats in the following:
Round 1 – 24 Heats
Round 2 – 12 Heats
Round 3 – 6 Heats
Round 4 – 3 Heats
Round 5 – 2 Heats
Round 6 – 1 Heats
Final

The no. of points awarded per podium finishes are:
1st Finishers – 1000 Points
2nd Finishers – 860 Points  
3rd Finishers – 730 Points
4th Finishers – 670 Points
 
Following here is the event Schedule for the 8 day long tournament starting from today:
Saturday October 27 – Parade of Nations and Opening Ceremony – Main St. / Pier Plaza
Saturday October 27 – Competition following the ceremony, 3pm
Sunday October 28 – Sunday November 4 – Competition on south side of Huntington Beach Pier, 7:30am – 5pm
Sunday November 4 – Closing Ceremony following end of competition
